First Look – Motorola S9-HD Bluetooth Stereo Headset

Motorola has released details of its upcoming S9-HD Bluetooth stereo headset.  It looks to be a great follow up to the original S9.  The S9-HD is enhanced with high definition audio and earbuds that reduce background noise and improve comfort.

The S9-HD also adds the following -

    • SRS WOW HD software to help improve 3-D sound perception.
    • Ear buds help isolate outside noise
    • Ported design, helps channel music to your ear canal

Motorola had hoped to release the S9-HD during the second quarter of 2008, something that obviously didn’t happen.  We are seeing an expected availability date of 9/18 now though so expect it in September.

    Plantronics M40s Stereo Earbud

Plantronics M40sTalk handsfree and listen to MP3s in high quality stereo with the Plantonics M40s stereo earbuds.

While these are not the quality of a good set of Shure earbuds, they also cost considerably less.  As a result they provide a great value for the price.

The headset provides decent sound and is comfortable.  A 2.5mm and 3.5mm adapter are both included for use with a phone or a MP3 player.

    Features include-

  • Multi use convenience for your mobile phone with integral music player, or your mobile phone and separate music player
  • Discreet design which easily fits in your pocket
  • In the ear style for a quick and comfortable fit
  • Clear conversations with a discreet omni-directional microphone
  • Simple one touch control to answer and end calls
  • The dangling mic works OK but don’t expect a lot of noise cancellation.  In fact, we haven’t found a dangling mic yet we really liked so Plantronics is no worse than the others.

Overall, this is a great value for both music listening and hands free conversations at around $20.

    Nokia Stereo Earbud Headset

Nokia Stereo earbud headsetThis handy Nokia compatible headset can work as either a handsfree headset for your phone with an in-line microphone and an answer/end button, or work as a stereo headset for the MP3 setting on your phone.  The inline volume control can be used with either your phone or your music player.  The earbuds are high performance speaker with a comfortable eargel covering.  The cord is long enough you can have your phone in your pocket and still be able to use the earbuds comfortably.  There is also a shirt clip included, allowing you to keep the microphone in place.  This is a great headset for the price.

    Features:

    • A hands free device that you can use to make phone calls with. It also doubles as a set of headphones.
    • Includes a microphone, 1-touch button and in-line music and phone volume control.
    • High performance speakers for best sound quality.
    • Listen to MP3′s in true stereo.
    • Light-weight, comfortable in-the-ear design for discrete listening.
    • Includes 3 sets of ear gels (small, medium & large)and shirt clip

    MP3 Mode:

    • Listen to MP3 music with crisp, clear sound.
    • Adjust the MP3 music volume with in-line volume control.
    • The incoming call ring tone will be played in both ear buds.

    Hands Free Mode:

    • Answer and end the phone call by one touch button.
    • Adjust the phone volume with in-line volume control.
    • Listen for the call in both ear buds.

Overall we thought this was an average accessory.  Sound quality for both music and voice was adequate but not high performance.  The mic did a good job of picking up outgoing conversation.

    Stereo Bluetooth Confusion

Nokia stereo blutooth headsetWith more phones including an MP3 player, bluetooth, and at times a headset jack there is some confusion over stereo bluetooth.

All Bluetooth enabled phones are not Stereo Bluetooth enabled.  This is a specific feature separate from bluetooth. Many phones are bluetooth enabled and have a stereo headset jack.  You can use both a mono or stereo bluetooth headset but the music will only come through one speaker.  To get stereo while listening to music you must use the stereo headset jack on the phone.

Any bluetooth headset will work with any bluetooth enabled phone.  Buying a stereo bluetooth headset will not provide stereo sound unless the phone is equiped with the stereo bluetooth option.
